HiTechnic Sensors

A person can do a lot with the sensors that come in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Base Set. You've got the light sensor, the touch sensor, the sound sensor, and even the ultrasonic sensor. But, what if you want to do more? What if you want you robot to be able to sense magnetic north, or to react differently to various colors? HiTechnic, in partnership with LEGO Education, has developed sensors to solve these problems, and they're working on more to solve programming challenges you haven't even thought of yet. Their compass sensor is available through our store, and we'll have the color sensor soon.  Watch this space, though  - as soon as more HiTechnic sensors are available, we'll let you know!

Compass Bot

Tim, one of our NXT fans in LEGO Education Customer Support, created this robot that uses the Compass Sensor the other day. We thought you might like to see it in various stages of building. [mygal=compass-bot] He also passed on a program to use for it. The program, called "Face North" is designed to do just that - when you run the program, the robot will automatically turn to face magnetic north. Tim says
"Keep in mind that I start most of my programs with a 'wait for touch' so people can choose 'run' then put the bot down and the program won't actually begin to execute until they activate the touch sensor. They can always just remove that one icon... and the program will begin to execute immediately when they choose 'run'."
